In a stunning, but not surprising, announcement showing a complete lack of idea as to what children actually need Rishi Sunak is now proposing children in the UK study maths for even longer than the current age of 16.
For anyone who has children in school or who have been in school most parents will have looked at the curriculum and seen the level of maths required for sixteen year olds. I was the first year of GCSEs and much of the maths that is studied now is way beyond me and I was told to go on and study A level Maths. But more importantly way beyond what the majority of us need to function in life.
We Need Skills Not Statistics
The more business owners you talk to the more you realise there are some massive failings in our education system. Many business owners are finding students may have lots of exams to their name but their practical skills are serverly lacking. I spoke to garage owners recently who are finding well-studied students don’t have the practical skills required and are letting Level III qualified students go for this reason. They express a desperate need for more students with hands-on skills not sitting behind a desk skills.
Running A Business
One of the most empowering things you can do as an individual is to run your own business and/or be self-employed. Why are our schools not letting our young people know this? Instead our system pushes young people into corporate jobs that spits them out at retirement age to hire a younger model. Most of these jobs are spent in office blocks, not healthy for the mind or the body. When you run your own business Sage Accounts is a great package you buy and input all your in-goings and out-goings. Why is Sage not being taught to every young person so they can then branch out into the world feeling ready to build their own venture?
Rising Mental Health Issues
Our school children suffer from anxiety, depression, self-harming, anorexia, bulimia, bullying, self-esteem issues and the government ploughs money into private people who offer therapy for these issues. Yet none of this is getting to the root cause of all of this – that our schools are teaching young people to be workers not innovators or entrepreneurs.
Time to Take Control
By connecting with other parents who feel the same as you we can create the education we want for our children. Our education will focus on their happiness, not their performances in tests. We have so many ideas and resources to make things easier for parents.
